High
Definition Video
First there was TV, then there was color TV and now there's hi def
TV (HD) . It's that big a deal. HD is no longer a vision for the future.
It's here now, and West End Video's got it. HD's visual image is 5
times better than standard definition. For sixty years, we in the
video business have had to deal with the reality of an image made
up of 640 x 480 pixels. The high definition format we use offers a
resolution of 1920 x 1080. Multiply those figures out and compare
the total number of pixels and you get a mathematical appreciation
for the technological advancement of HD.
Forget the numbers, though. Where you really get an appreciation for
HD is by just looking at it. HD offers the visual experience heretofore
found only in a movie theater. Whereas standard def TV gets blurrier
and blurrier as you enlarge it, HD just keeps on getting better. Pick
out the faces of people in the stands. See individual waves in the
ocean.
And here's the sweetest part. Producing in HD is no more expensive
than shooting a comparable production in standard definition. Virtually
all video projection systems accept and display a high def signal
with stunning results. Thus, HD production is ideal for showing at
conventions and large meetings. Similarly almost all computer screens
display HD signals.
Given all that, there are some facts which are holding HD back, albeit
temporarily. The vast majority of homes and offices are not yet equipped
to show HD in all its glory. But that is changing. The major TV and
premium cable networks are now broadcasting almost all of their programming
in HD. Prices are coming down on HD sets and they are flying off the
shelves. Visit any Best Buy or Circuit City and check out their TV
display area.
High Def DVD players are also not yet available. However, a specification
has been adopted and by year's end such players will be hitting the
shelves. Therefore, if you want your program to last, let West End
Video shoot it in HD. To download a sample HD clip, click
