Traditional video programs are linear. That is, they are designed
to be played front to back with no jumping around. Even with all the
talk about interactive media, old-fashioned linear media is still
thriving and won't ever go away. For example, 100 per cent of theatrical
motion pictures as well as TV programs are linear. Motivational and
informational documentaries are typical West End Video approaches
to traditional video.
Though the format is traditional, the tools West End Video use to
make the programs, as well as their technical quality, are radically
new. In the last few years, we have moved from analog Betacam-SP tape
to digital DV-CAM tape. We have two cameras to choose from, the Sony
DSR-500 and the Sony hi-definition HDR-FX1, both of them having excellent
picture quality and sound.
While we have edited video using digital computer techniques for many
years, we can now upload video directly into our digital edit system
without "playing it." This method means that there is absolutely
no difference between the images and sound recorded on the original
camera tape and those on the edited master program.
In the past, copies of traditional videos have been distributed mainly
on VHS tape. They are increasingly being sent around on DVDs and that's
definitely the way of the future.
